Music Appreciation
This music appreciation class takes students on a journey through American music by focusing on a different decade each week, beginning with the 1920s. In each class, students will learn about a key song, influential artist, and a popular dance move from that era, discovering how music both shaped and reflected social changes. At the end of the course, each student will complete a creative project highlighting their favorite decade, song or artist. This project encourages personal exploration and a deeper connection to American music history.
Science
We run into science in everything we do, from cooking to reading to walking outdoors to watching a glorious sunset (or sunrise for you early morning types). In this class, we aim to show students that science can be fun and engaging even as we learn about different famous and/or infamous scientists. We will use cooking, designing, creative thinking and many other methods to create an engaging class full of scientific facts to help you end up with a well-rounded student.
Art
In the art class, students will explore a variety of different art mediums including watercolor paints, oil pastels, crayons, acrylic paints and colored pencils. They will learn different techniques and have fun creating various art projects. They will also be creating art for various holidays and some of the planned performances. Children are so naturally creative and we are excited to see what your children will create!
Robots
We will use VEX Robotics kits to build, code and race robots. This will help students understand mechanics and coding, some vital 21st century skills. One of the most important of the skills that will be taught is how to break a big task down into smaller, actionable steps. This helps to show students how to be successful in any situation they may find themselves in, while having fun in the process.
Makerspace
In our makerspace class, we will be exploring our creativity by making things out of all kinds of materials. We will use everything from paper, cardboard and tape to marble tracks and even LEGOS! Some weeks will be themed around seasons, holidays, etc. but others will be “free build” to really stretch our imaginations. We are very excited to see all the wonderful things that will be made in our space this year!
Storytelling
Human’s connect with each other through stories. In this exciting class, students learn how to tell a gripping and powerful tale. Explore cultures of the world through their stories and fables and come to understand the greater human experience better. Students will use multiple sources to make a fable their own and will benefit from one-on-one coaching from Kristen Clay, a professional storyteller. Students will be encouraged to participate in a Storytelling Festival at the end of the fall semester.
Public Speaking/Audition Prep
This class is designed to help students build self-confidence, use eye contact and present themselves with poise in any situation. Through engaging exercises and mock auditions, students will learn how to stand tall, speak clearly and connect with an audience or panel. Emphasis will be placed on developing self-esteem and overcoming nerves in a supportive environment. This is designed to prepare students for future opportunities where public speaking may be involved through strengthening their communication and presentation skills.
Tech
What does “tech” include today? A little bit of everything. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of AI, computers, research and engineering. While this is not an engineering class, we will be using the engineering design process of Imagine, Research, Plan, Create, Test, Assess and Improve in all our projects. Projects will include things like website building, social media design and usage, computer safety and how to present our best selves online and in person. This class will require use of computers and/or mobile devices.
Choir
Singing is such a great way to express our creativity. In this class, students will learn how to recognize their part in a song, be taught the basics of reading music and learn how to sing along with a group whether you have a solo or are a part of the ensemble.
Backstage Class
There are so many more parts to theater than just getting up on stage and performing. Costumes, sets, props, lighting designs, projections, ads, programs - the list goes on. During this class, children will learn how to sew costumes, how to saw boards, how to hot glue props, how to design an ad, how to build a program, how to design a stage projection and so many more skills that go on behind the scenes.
Debate
In our debate class, students will learn the fundamentals of structured arguments, including how to form a clear thesis, support ideas with evidence, and respectfully rebut opposing viewpoints. Students will explore basic logic and persuasive techniques while practicing public speaking and active listening. Through fun, age-appropriate topics and friendly debates, they’ll build confidence in expressing their opinions and thinking critically. The class will also emphasize skills such as teamwork, respectful dialogue, and effective communication which will help them throughout their lives.
Lunch/Recess/Socialization
What’s the best thing about lunch? Getting to hang out and socialize with your friends! During this time period, we as teachers/mentors will do our best to make sure that your children meet new friends and become better friends with their old friends. All ages have lunch together but will typically sit with their own class groups as their friends are there.
